Featuring an exciting mix of Malaysia's cutting-edge art personalities, the fest cuts across multiple genres and presents new perspectives, offering an intriguing re-examination and creative storytelling of the Malayan Emergency, sixty years on. Events include:

12 YEARS

Directed by Fahmi Fadzil

Performed by Janet Moo Tein Ni, Lim Chung Wei, Mislina Mustaffa and Mohammad Hariry

Sun 26 Oct 2008, 4pm

Directed by Hari Azizan

Hari Azizan, director of the much-publicised The Vagina Monologues, brings us a story that trace the lives of two good friends that change forever when they are forced to leave everything behind by the British army and start afresh in a New Village during the Malayan Emergency.

REVOLUSI '48

Sun 26 Oct 2008, 4.00pm

Directed by Fahmi Reza

Revolusi '48 is Fahmi Reza's sequel to his award-winning 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka. It chronicles the largely forgotten armed revolution for national liberation launched against British colonial rule. Hear the untold story of those who struggled in the anti-colonial guerrilla war of independence during the Malayan Revolution of 1948. The screening on Wed 23rd is accompanied by the director's commentary live. Meanwhile, 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka will be specially screened again on at 8pm of 20 Oct. This date happens to be the 61st anniversary of the Malaya-wide strike against the Federation of Malaya Constitutional Proposals devised by the British colonial regime, which is the subject of the documentary.

50 Tahun Terang Bulan Terbarai

Dalam buku cenderamatanya, Saiful memetik rencana Hishamuddin Rais bertajuk "Lima Puluh Tahun Terang Bulan Terbarai" yang mengkirik hebat lagu kebangsaan Malaysia; Memula Moon a.k.a Terang Bulan a.k.a Negaraku a.k.a Negara Kuku.

Antara lukisan-lukisan yang dipamerkan ialah Tersusun (Acrylic on Canvas, 122 x 183 cm), Berhala Berkembar (Acrylic &Bitumen on canvas, 244 x 122 cm), Tertindas (Bitumen on canvas, 123 x 215cm), Terancang (Acrylic &Bitumen on canvas, 183 x 122 cm) dan Jalur Tembelang (Acrylic & Bitumen on canvas, 213.5 x 183 cm).

Gwo-Burne Layan

The Exhibition

One of Malaysia’s brightest young artistic talents Saiful Razman presents his first solo exhibition, entitled Pelan-Pelan Dan Bilik Gerakan. Tackling the theme of urban fatigue and psychological stress of the sensibility-numbing life in the Klang Valley where Saiful lives and works, the artist puts city life squarely in focus in his latest works. Among the subjects Saiful tackles include media overload, religious and moral hypocrisy, monocultural and monotheistic tyranny, and right-wing chauvinist ideologies.

The Artworks

"Pelan-Pelan" is the title of Saiful’s new series of drawings and paintings executed in acrylic and bitumen on canvas, with emphasis on repeated patterns that symbolise the repetitive drudgery of urban life. The title is a play on the Malay words “pelan-pelan” which literally translates as “plans” but when pronounced is similar in sound to “perlahan, perlahan” which literally translates as “slow, slow”.

"Bilik Gerakan" is the title of the room installation that will be part of the exhibition, which includes drawings by Saiful Razman, video works entitled “Dilarang Melarang” with music by Gasoline Grenade; and Hishamuddin Rais and Mohd. Redzuan Othman’s photographic documentation of this year's general elections, entitled “789”. “Bilik Gerakan” is the Malay term for the “mobilisation centres” of political parties during the election period.

About the Artist

Since graduating with BA in Fine Art from UiTM in 2003, Saiful Razman has made a name for himself with invitations to participate in various exhibitions in Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. He was featured in Valentine Willie Fine Art's Three Young Contemporaries in 2004 and was selected for the artist-in-residence programme at Rimbun Dahan in 2004/2005. Aside from his art, he was involved as a committee member of Notthatbalai, the annual fringe arts festival held at Lost Generation Space. Formerly the arts space manager at The Annexe, Central Market, also plays in the punk rock band Gasoline Grenade.

Melati Suryodarmo : Solitaire

Gimme a break!

Melati Suryodarmo : Solitaire

on Thursday, 17 April 2008, at 8pm
at the Annexe Studio

The Annexe, Central Market

Melati will open her show with a performance piece, 'I Love You'.

"I INTEND TO TOUCH the fluid border between the body and its environment through my art works. I aim to create a concentrated level of intensity without the use of narrative structures. Talking about politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able to digest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level of factual absurdity."
Absurd yet poignant, this landmark event will introduce the KL art scene to one of the most promising and relevant artist working in the performance medium.

Exhibition
Dates: Thu 10 - Sun 27 Apr, 2008
Hours: 11am - 7pm daily (Closed on Mondays)

New Malaysian Essays 1 - Launching

Date: Sat 16, Feb 2008
Time: 8pm
Venue: The Annexe Gallery, Central Market Annexe, KL.
Admission: Free!
Enquiries: 03 2070 1137
A new book from Amir Muhammad, editor of the best-selling "Malaysian Politicians Say the Darndest Things (Vol 1)."

New Malaysian Essays 1 is the first of a planned annual series concentrating on local non-fiction writing. From polemic to ode to memoir, this series invites Malaysian readers – and writers – to notice, analyse and interpret the living, throbbing, squelching vitality around them. Multi-disciplinary, multi-tasking and best appreciated on multi-vitamins, this first collection takes us from Brian Yap's election-era critique to Amir Muhammad's alternative lexicon by way of Burhan Baki's elegant deconstructions, Aminuddin Mahmud's seminar on branding and Saharil Hasnin Sanin's knockabout ruminations on language before rounding off with Sonia Randhawa's stirring call for national (and therefore personal) self-realisation.

Also launching are two collections of short stories: "The Old House & Other Stories" (Hologram Publishing) by Chuah Guat Eng and "Kasut Biru Rubina; Koleksi Fiksyen Pop Untuk Jiwa2 Hadhari" by Sufian Abas (Sang Freud Press).

All three books will be on sale.

There will be live music by Mia Palencia & Jerome Kugan, who are both previewing songs from their upcoming solo albums, "Finding My Way" and "Songs for
a Shadow" respectively.

Oh, and free food!
Due to some objectionable content, the book will not be stocked in major Malaysian book-chains. So come get it at the book launch!

I was called to promote my very first bookKONFLIKTING. It will also be sold there. Grab it cheaply!
