Hebatnya Kemiskinan Di Terengganu!
“Tetapi Kerajaan Negeri Terengganu mahu merobohkannya”, kata Lim.

MEDIA STATEMENT 19 January 2009 Police, EC and MACC should investigate bribery of journalists
Kuala Lumpur: The authorities should immediately investigate reports that officers from the Terengganu state Information Ministry had offered RM300 cash to journalists covering the Kuala Terengganu by-election over the weekend.
The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is disappointed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has decided not to investigate the case because they said the reporters could not identify the giver.
“This reflects the lack of initiative on the part of the MACC to respond to what is clearly an attempt to bribe journalists covering the by-election. This is unacceptable, as the authorities should be able to easily identify who the culprits were. Are we to accept this excuse from an agency that is to undertake a huge task of investigating corruption?
“This approach makes a mockery of the so-called reforms towards a corrupt-free society that was declared by the Prime Minister in his last minute attempts to prove that he was doing something on the issue,” said CIJ executive director Gayathry Venkiteswaran.
Gayathry said the authorities should take the matter seriously and especially the report lodged by the two journalists who acted immediately upon discovering that they were given cash in an envelope.
CIJ commends the two journalists, Chen Shaua Fui and Chan Wei See from online media MerdekaReview.com for lodging police reports immediately after receiving the cash.
The journalists are not only driven to report a criminal activity but are serious in upholding high ethical practices by rejecting any form of inducements.
In the incident, reporters at the media centre who were covering the by-election were asked to list their names, organisations and telephone numbers before being given an envelope containing six RM50 notes. Some of the journalists were reported to have returned the money to the staff at the centre, who claimed they did not know the giver. The ministry has denied making any payments to the journalists.
“The Information Minister boasted in October last year that there was no envelope journalism in Malaysia where journalists and editors are paid to highlight certain stories. How ironic that the alleged bribery over the weekend has taken place within the state information department's media centre.
“We call for an investigation by the Election Commission (EC), the police and MACC to identify the givers and that action be taken immediately,” she added.
While there are no documented cases of bribery of media personnel, influence over newsroom decisions come in the form of laws and political pressure. Among the more critical laws are the Printing Presses and Publications Act and the Communication and Multimedia Act to ensure that the ruling government has ways to penalise the media if the coverage is critical of them.

Candidate quality tops voters’ considerations
News ReleaseJanuary 13th 2009
BANGI – Days ahead of the crucial Kuala Terengganu by-elections, an opinion poll conducted by Merdeka Center for Opinion Research finds that voters were more intense in considering candidate quality over other factors such as issues and contesting parties.
The survey also found a marked dichotomy between the sentiments expressed by Malay and Chinese voters in the district over the direction of the country and state as well as on issues.
The poll’s findings hopes to uncover issues affecting the voters there as they make choices as well as to uncover how they are responding to statements and campaign issues brought forth by the contesting parties.
Issues
The survey reveals that a majority of voters in the Malay-majority constituency felt that things in the country and state of Terengganu were headed in the right direction.
However, upon closer scrutiny the survey found that Chinese voter sentiments were more subdued, with respect to the direction of the country, only 36% of Chinese respondents agreed that it was in “the right direction” and were split at 50% with respect to the direction of the state of Terengganu. At the same time, 70% of Malay voters said that “things were in the right direction” for the state of Terengganu.
When given a list of issues that they feel the state government should pay attention to, respondents chose “controlling inflation” (21%), “strengthening the position of Islam” (26%) and “bringing continued development” (16%) as most important. Among Chinese voters however, 53% wanted the government “to treat non-Malay communities more fairly” and a further 18% cited “fighting corruption”.
Motivations
Reflecting perhaps the developments surrounding the selection of the respective contesting candidates, the survey found that voters were more intense in considering candidate quality over other factors such as issues, contesting parties or party leaders.
The survey found that 77% of voters remarked candidate quality as “very important” as opposed to 55% and 67% for current issues and party capability, respectively.
Among the Chinese respondents however, the issue of fair treatment for non-Bumiputras appeared to have strong currency. 75% strongly or somewhat agreed that by electing a
non-BN candidate, the community could send a strong signal to the BN ruling government.
In another question, 56% of Chinese and 46% of Malay respondents agreed that voting opposition could push the BN government to “correct itself”.
The issue of Hudud captured the notice of only one-half of the Chinese voters in Kuala Terengganu. Only 18% of the Chinese voters interviewed remarked that the issue plays a
“very important”, while a further 32% saying “somewhat important” role in the election.
The survey found that issues pertaining to perceived threats to Malay political power did not resonate in the Malay dominant constituency. Only 17% agreed that “Malay political power was weakened by demands made by non Malay communities after the March 8th 2008 general elections” while 74% felt that “Malay political power was weakened by corrupt and self serving leaders”.
Voting Intentions
The survey found it difficult to ascertain the voting intention of voters in the district at the time the poll was conducted. Based on observations on the data collected, the survey believes that the Malay vote at the point in time the survey was conducted to be split with a small margin of voters, perhaps around 8% still remaining undecided. The survey found that some 11% of voters have not made their choices at that point in time.
Tendencies among Chinese voters were also difficult to gauge but observations on responses towards issues indicate a slight leaning in favor of the opposition.
The opinion poll was carried out by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research between 7- 11th January 2009 to gauge voters’ perceptions of current issues and developments surrounding the by-election. 527 voters registered in Kuala Terengganu comprising 408 Malay and 119 Chinese respondents were interviewed by telephone in the poll.
Respondents were selected on the basis of random stratified sampling along ethnicity, gender and state constituency. The survey was funded internally by Merdeka Center for Opinion Research for release to the public.

BN Government fails to cater for the welfare of the ELDERLY ...
Captured from Charles Hector's writingThe UMNO led-BN government attempts to mislead Malaysians into believing that it is a caring government - that cares about its elderly - the 'warga emas' (or 'golden citizens') - and that was all that hoo-hah about pensioners - and the extra additional benefits that pensioners in Malaysia would enjoy.
What about the rest of the elderly in Malaysia - i.e. those that are not pensioners? Now, if I am not wrong, I believe that the number of pensioners since 1957 is less than 500,000 - what about the other 'warga mas' - in our country which has a population of more than 27 million today.
How many 'warga mas' do we have in Malaysia? How many of them are under the pension scheme? How many of them are spouses of persons under pension schemes that benefit from them? How many are those that do not receive pensions?
We really need statistics of persons above 55 years old (i.e. the normal age of retirement)? But then, when I went hunting for this information at the Malaysian Statistic Department website - I found that they did not have this required figure?
They had figures for those who were in the following age groups only from 1963 until 2008 :-
0 - 14 years
15 - 64 years
65 years and above....
I wonder why there is no information about how many are above 55 years of age...
In fact, it will be good to know how many are 40-50, 50-55, 55-64, 65 and above. That will be needed for the necessary planning about our 'warga mas'.
Will some member of parliament (MP) ask these relevant questions?
How many of these persons over 55 (and retired) are on pension schemes?
How many are not?
Remember that our good government convinced many civil servants to opt for the EPF scheme - and they did so, and now they will no more be getting their pensions.
And the problem with the EPF, is that for many very little remains because again our goon BN government allowed persons to take out the mony meant for their old age t0 BUY things now. WHY? to help our ailing economy. Hence take your 'old-age-savings', and spend it now....What remains in the EPF accounts when persons retire now will not be able to sustain them for very long, would it now?
Now, for the self employed - there was no EPF - and after a time, you would not be able to work and earn anymore. Will there be enough monies to sustain you until the age of 72...77 or maybe even 100?And the important news, is the Malaysian Life Expectancy is about 72 (male) and 77(women) - and that means we have to look at the welfare of our warga mas for a very loing time after they retire at 55 or 58...
Life Expectancy At Birth (Updated 2 January 2009)
Life Expectancy At Birth(Number of Years)
Male
(2005) 71.4
(2006p) 71.5
(2007p) 71.7
Female
(2005) 76.2
(2006p) 76.3
(2007p) 76.5
The Malaysian UMNO-led BN government (and even the possible future Pakatan Rakyat government) must seriously consider how it is going to take care of our elderly in Malaysia - our warga emas? ALL of them - not just the few 'pensioners'...
The current statistics say that there are more than 1.2 million persons in Malaysia above the age of 65.If there are about 500,000 pensioners, then maybe those above 65 would be about 200,000 - so what about the welfare and care for the about 1 million above 65 Malaysians.
How about the welfare of the millions of Malaysians above 55.... this could be a further 5 - 6 million persons.
One thing that could be done immediately is to provide free healthcare and treatment for all warga emas above the age of 55 at our National Heart Institute (IJN)..
That is why, I believe that the government must put in place policies, laws and facilities to ensure welfare of its people - health, food, shelter, clothing ....and in today's world, it should also include communication.
Mohd Najib Razak, possibly the BN's choice for the next Prime Minister obviously is not interested in the welfare of individual persons in Malaysia - just the making of more money and profit. That was clear in his support for the privatisation of the IJN (National Heart Institute). Luckily, that has been stopped for the moment - but still IJN or Heart healthcare remains unaccessible to the normal Malaysian, who was not a public servant....or the majority of the elderly in Malaysia...

Some Facts About Kuala Terengganu Voters' Registration
8,388 or 10% of KT Voters Have No Rumahhttp://malvu.blogspot.com/2008/12/8388-or-10-of-kt-voters-have-no-norumah.html
10.5% of voters in Kuala Terengganu are registered without a house number (NoRumah), even after excluding postal voters. SPR's voter address registration seems archaic, with 35% voters nationwide without house numbers, and without ZIP code. Why not automatically register voters and use MyKad address?
KT Has 143 Voting Streams with Uneven Sizes, in 36 Voting Stations
http://malvu.blogspot.com/2008/12/143-voting-streams-with-uneven-sizes-in.html
We list KT's 36 voting stations (TM), 143 voting streams (Saluran), and the maximum number of voters that can appear in a vote tally. Two oldest voters pushed to the end of queue?
KT Subdivided into 4 DUN, 38 DM, 36 TM, 336 Localities
http://malvu.blogspot.com/2008/12/kt-subdivides-into-4-dun-38-dm-36-tm.html
Kuala Terengganu (P036) contains 4 state seats (DUN), 38 voting districts (DM), 36 voting stations (TM), 143 voting streams (Saluran), and 336 localities. Oddly, KT contains very small and large localities (1 to 2,812 voters).
More write-ups on KT electoral rolls, postal voters, and changes to police IC that may cause some confusion:
1001 Police IC Changes = 1001 Potential Confusions
http://malvu.blogspot.com/2008/12/1001-police-ic-changes-1001-potential.html
SPR again slightly modified all police IC numbers. The same police voters actually remain registered in KT. But researchers who compare electoral rolls using IC numbers may mistake them as 1001 missing voters and - at the same time - another 1001 newly added voters. Such confusion had accounted for half the mystery and uproar about "900+ missing voters" in the Permatang Pauh by-election in August 2008.
1001 Police Voters in KT
http://malvu.blogspot.com/2008/12/1001-police-voters-in-kt.html
Of Kuala Terengganu's 1,035 postal voters, 1,001 or 97% are police personnel. Of these, 864 are registered at 3 police locations within the Ladang state seat (N15). Other than police personnel, there are 27 army and 7 absentee postal voters residing abroad.
SPR Improves Voter Name Consistency, With Mixed Results
http://malvu.blogspot.com/2008/12/spr-improves-voter-name-consistency.html
In the KT electoral roll gazetted on 2008 Dec 5, SPR has improved voter name consistencies by changing backquote (`) to single quote ('), and made some standardization of "Bin" and "Binti" formats, etc. But there were reversals, and accidental addition of double spaces into 121 names, etc.
