Free Burmese Asylum SeekersThe Youth Wing of People’s Justice Party (AMK) calls the Ministry of Home Affairs, Datuk Radzi Sheikh Ahmad and the Immigration Department to immidiately release 20 over asylum seekers and refugees from Burma who were arrested in a RELA (People's Volunteer Corp) raid on 4th April, 2007.
Among them, two nursing mother with new-born babies were also arrested by the RELA. They are Bawi Sung, who has a 3-month-old baby, and Hniang Zitial who has a 1-month-old baby.
They were arrested when they are doing grocery shopping. Both their babies are not with them when they were arrested. The RELA raid took place in Pudu market, downtown of Kuala Lumpur at around 11am. The detainees including 5 recognised refugees by the United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR).
AMK condemns the arrest and calls for the immediate release of all the arrested asylum seekers, especially those UNHCR refugee card holders and women. We need to remind the Government that Article 14 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) guarantees everyone to have the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
As an elected member of the UN Human Rights Council, the Malaysian government should respect the right of refugees in accordance to international human rights law.
